regaining focus….

A few great quotes that have filled my head and heart these past weeks.  2020 with the craziness of Covid and the lunacy of Trumpism really affected my outlook and caused me to look deep within…  then i read these…. yeah…. Richard Rohr does it again!!              ”The God we’ve been presenting people with is just too small and stingy for a big hearted person to trust or to love back” “Authentic God experience always expands your seeing and never constricts it”   Hope they are helpful….as you open your eyes and your heart to a wild and crazy and wonderully diverse Christ infused world we live in…

Wintering….

January 30, 2021
In the midst of this time of pandemic and societal chaos, it has been disquieting to see the shallowness of faith as so many pant after the power of political ideas, consumed by false ideals and reach for the applause of messianic personalities… Its time to break from our cultural morass and seek silence…and reflection and empowerment.  Not from political power…or religious fundamentalism or secular narcissism but to reflect on the true inner freedom that we are offered…that we have denied and that we continue to cover up with our half truths and denials of truth.   Winter is a time that nature takes to replenish, to absorb energy, to die and to rest for what is coming.   Its time to winter and breathe and reconsider this thing called life…before it is taken fr…

The brevity of life

December 28, 2020
Tonight my hero lies in a hospital bed 650 miles from my home.  From reports he hovers between lucid thoughts and wild imaginations as something misfires in his brain.  The man who reared me, who gave me my name and who has walked this earth for almost 90 years now seems to have taken his first steps toward this thing we call eternity…  Deep inside i keep saying, ah he will be okay, he will fine, just needs some rest.  But reality tells me this man i have called pops, who used to play catch on the front walk after dinner, and threw a mean fast ball,  this quiet man who has wrestled with his demons and won, who has loved his wife, cared for his kids, and always provided even when the money was not there.  This quiet mannered man, who rarely spoke a harsh w…

Life

May 6, 2019
In the mid south, we are in the midst of spring…new life is all around us, from the birds filling their nests with expectant life…..to frogs croaking their love songs at night, to flowers unfolding their quiet beauty…. and yet in the midst of this resurrection season…i am also reminded of the fragility of life… From the bizarre accident in nicaragua, that has altered a young man’s life and future….to the sad and shocking death of a wonderful young woman who has written marvelous books about faith and doubt…   On saturday night, i sat on the floor of my daughters home, and tickled my One year old granddaughter, and reveled in her giggles and huge smile…as she embarks on this journey we call life…. and on sunday night i sat next to my dear friend who is tur…

When the shadows slant eastward

March 3, 2019
I was struck by this description of the second act of life I recently read in Life Reimagined:The science, art and Opportunity of midlife by Barabara Hagerty, “When the shadows begin to slant eastward.” What a great description of this stage of life…  the sands of time are fewer and flowing faster…and we grasp at life knowing that the ultimate end is now on the horizon… What will retirement be like, if we retire at all?  What will my purpose and intention be in my waning years?  And will there be opportunities that will expand my thinking and my doing.  Will the end of my days be spent in recliners and golf courses? Or will they be spent with intention and purpose, making impact and paving new paths for others to find life. These are all won…
