When the shadows slant eastward

I was struck by this description of the second act of life I recently read in Life Reimagined:The science, art and Opportunity of midlife by Barabara Hagerty, “When the shadows begin to slant eastward.”

What a great description of this stage of life…  the sands of time are fewer and flowing faster…and we grasp at life knowing that the ultimate end is now on the horizon…

What will retirement be like, if we retire at all?  What will my purpose and intention be in my waning years?  And will there be opportunities that will expand my thinking and my doing.  Will the end of my days be spent in recliners and golf courses? Or will they be spent with intention and purpose, making impact and paving new paths for others to find life.

These are all wonderful and sometimes scary things to ponder as the shadows begin appearing in the east…
